Tractor Tyres Guide & Advice

February 11, 2009 by Brian, under Tractor Tyres, Tyre Characteristics.

As we are only too aware, a tractor is used to produce a high tractive effort at minimal speeds. This is due to the requirement of pulling certain machinery such as ploughs or other trailer type loads. So it doesn’t take a genius to figure out the importance of the tractor tyres have on the vehical.

The beauty is that there are numerous types of tractor tyre available for use. Each of these different variations have their own unique charms and abilities. Gladly however, whatever job the tractor must do, be sure in knowing that there will be a tyre to help specifically for that job. Whatever the requirement, there will be a specific tyre to fully meet the needs of the driver.

Before I go into a list of some of the more common tyres, I want you to remember the importance of tyre pressure when using a tractor. Most of you seasoned farmers will already know this but I wonder what number of you actually put this into practice and follow the recommended tyre pressures are implemented.

The reason why it is so important to have the tyres at the correct pressure is due to the fact that you will get maximum performance from your vehicle. Tyres on the wrong pressure for the wrong job can greatly reduce the effectiveness and performance of the farm vehicle.

You see, the farmers that don’t pay attention to these things are the farmers who are getting hit harder in the wallet. For example, would you enjoy losing 30 to 40 percent of engine power through roll and slip resistance? This is a known fact in the industry that if you were using a 200 horse power tractor you could only be getting roughly 100 horse power worth of tractive force!
